Μeteora means “middle of the sky”, “suspended in the air” or “in the heavens above”. Meteora is a huge cluster of dark rocks rising out of Kalambaka, near the first hills of Pindos and Hasia. The monasteries of Meteora, which are built on top of some of the rocks, is currently the second most important group of monasteries in Greece after Mount Athos.
