One of the most characteristic villages of Mani is that of Vathia (also Vatheia). It is located on top of a hill overlooking the blue sea and the sunset. The two and three storey imposing towers of Mani are a priceless architectural treasure for our country. Together with other stone buildings of the village they create a real fortress – the guardian of the region.
The settlement was created after the 18th century and it was full of life in the 19th century. In the early decades of this century the exodus to the big cities begun and in 1980 there were just a few residents left, mainly older women, and Vathia was an abandoned settlement. After 1980 the GNTO ( Greek National Tourism Organization) restored most towers and formed them into guesthouses.
